I get it: putting on sunscreen isn’t always fun. I get it: putting on sunscreen isn’t always fun. Sometimes it’s a pain. However, shortcuts do not always work. Case in point: sunscreen serum. Sunscreen won’t work to it’s full potential unless it’s used last. Supergoop has tried to explain their flub with this product in various ways. They say that the SPF in it is to protect the vitamin C from being consumed by UV rays and that you should use another sunscreen after. 1. This is like saying “wear a rain coat over your rain coat so your rain coat doesn’t get wet.” Having vitamin C be consumed by UV is THE POINT. Second, if this product isn’t meant to be used as a sunscreen, why would you go through the in vivo testing to get it an SPF rating? My recommendation: use your favorite vitamin C serum and your favorite sunscreen and call it a day.
.
🤔 Have you used a “sunscreen serum” before? What are your thoughts?

Yes, you can get rid of your double chin without s Yes, you can get rid of your double chin without surgery! #Kybella is an injectable bile acid that dissolves fat. It’s cleared by the FDA for submental fat (AKA double chin) but has also been used off label to dissolve fat in other areas of the body. While this treatment is effective, it does take several rounds spaced at least a month apart to see full results. For your very own cosmetic consultation with me for Kybella or any other procedure, call (929) 210-6000 !

One question for you: WHY?! I see lots of products One question for you: WHY?! I see lots of products like this claiming to be miracle cures that just provide a sensory experience that makes you think they’re effective. In this case that sensation is pain. It could also be tingling (think Noxzema), pulling (peel-off masks) etc. However: a sensory experience does not results make! Oh and anything that claims to remove “toxins” from your skin should set off alarm bells 🚨 .

Yesterday was a dumpster fire of a day but somethi Yesterday was a dumpster fire of a day but something good happened while I was at work: my coworkers and I had the opportunity to receive our first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. I have been anxiously awaiting this day as I work closely with patients and want to ensure their safety during the pandemic. The injection was quick and painless. My left arm is sore and I was little tired yesterday, but otherwise I feel great! I thank @mountsinainyc for such a smooth process!
.
If you have any questions about my experience with the vaccine, please feel free to ask them. I know some people are concerned about the safety of the vaccine, which is totally valid, so I’m happy to serve as a first-hand source of information.

Obviously there’s gonna be some exceptions to every rule— if you want to pick up a product that’s just going to make you feel good, there might be a benefit to it.

🥵 Let’s investigate this... burning 👀 ques 🥵 Let’s investigate this... burning 👀 question. Should you stop washing your face in the shower? Many say that since shower water is often very hot that you should be washing your face separately. HOWEVER, your body would benefit from turning down the temp as well. Simple solution: turn down the temperature to lukewarm and continue washing your body and face in one go!

I believe that we all exist on a skincare spectrum I believe that we all exist on a skincare spectrum. On one end we have the “do-littles.” These are people who don’t give much thought to taking care of their skin. Those that use whatever’s lying around. Those from the school of 18-in-1 shampoo/body wash/facial cleanser/surface degreaser/motor oil. On the other hand, we have the “do-the-mosts.” These are the skincare fans, mongers, collectors etc. If it’s new and shiny, they want it in their 20-step routine and they couldn’t tell you why but mind your own business, alright?

Both classes of people are often missing the same element in their skincare routine: intentionality. It’s my firm belief as both a dermatologist and a skincare enthusiast that there should be a purpose behind each practice, procedure and product that you choose for your skin, hair and nails. What’s more is that there should be thought behind the actual process of skincare beyond just what you’re buying. Achieving these goals may be difficult at times, so I’ve created a guide to making your approach to skincare more intentional.

Do you think I could get away with never addressin Do you think I could get away with never addressing fragrance again? Because I want to. This was one of the ultimate skincare debates of 2020, and I think the main takeaway should be (to borrow from @theecowell ) "it's compex, and it depends." The variables that come into play include the condition of your own skin, the fragrant components in question, the formulation of the product etc. I think this issue highlights something that's very important to remember when approaching skincare: beware of blanket statements. "Fragrance is bad and everyone should avoid fragrance at all costs" is not a nuanced or informed take.

What skincare debates would you like to see put to rest in 2021?

NEWSFLASH: I have not tried everything from #cerav NEWSFLASH: I have not tried everything from #cerave or #theordinary (though I like both brands). However, I have been tagged by many people saying I had a hand in getting them to buy products from these or other brands which I have never tried and in some cases have never even heard of. I think this is symptomatic of a larger notion: "derms on social media all recommend the same products from the same brands." While this is easy to disprove, it's also beside the point for me. One of the things that has surprised me most in my social media work is how wrapped up people get in what products they should be buying. I see people breaking down ingredient lists and doing product comparisons to no end. However, WHAT YOU DO IS FAR MORE IMPORTANT THAN WHAT YOU USE! What do I mean by this? Wearing sunscreen every day is the most important thing; which sunscreen you choose is secondary. Having good habits will do more for you than agonizing over which product is the most perfect. Skincare is more than just products.
.
Have you noticed more of an emphasis on products than habits? How do you feel about it?

The eternal skincare question: do I need a #toner? The eternal skincare question: do I need a #toner? Truth be told, all you need is cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen. Everything else is an extra. But we like being extra in this house! So go for a toner, essence etc if you like that liquidy texture. Just make sure it makes sense as part of your broader routine.

One of the most common conditions I see in kids is #eczema. This is a common skin condition that can cause both rash and itch which can disrupt both comfort and sleep for the whole family. If you think your child may have eczema, discuss it with your pediatrician who can provide treatment options or referral to a board-certified dermatologist.

Love debunking hair myths. This one prompted by @c Love debunking hair myths. This one prompted by @charlotteparler. Now before you start in the comments: yes this is something that people believe. Many commenters on TikTok felt validated by this knowledge because they had been told over and over to get trims to make their hair grow. Second, yes, trims can make your hair look healthier, especially if you have split ends. HOWEVER, please note that breakage can happen at any point in the hair shaft, not just the ends. The best way to avoid it is to limit heat styling, dyes, vigorous brushing etc.

Time for some myth busting! I took on #hyaluronic Time for some myth busting! I took on #hyaluronicacid myths with @ms_hannah_e earlier this year, but I thought I'd bring back some of the highlights for the new people (AKA, the majority of you). Most of the controversy around HA is concerned with it's inflammatory potential or hydrating effect. Truth is, there's more evidence to show that it's protective for skin than the other way around. Also, while it does hydrate the epidermis when used topically, that's where most cosmetics work their magic. It's also what gives it the plumping effect that so many of us love. This post is part of a larger myth-busting initiative undertaken with all the accounts you see on the last slide. Pay their pages a visit for even more myth busting!

Earlier this week, I became a board-certified derm Earlier this week, I became a board-certified dermatologist. This designation comes after earning an MD, completing a dermatology residency and passing a rigorous certification exam administered by the American Board of Dermatology. This process was made even more challenging for me and my fellow residency graduates this year due to the pandemic, but we finally made it! This represents the culmination of years of work and is one of my proudest moments. It also makes me both a diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology and a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Now that I am board-certified, I look forward to helping advance the field of dermatology and continuing to build my practice here in New York. For appointments, please call (929) 210-6000.
